While older towns and villages were built with compact intersections, newer suburban streets have corners with large corners, built to accommodate large trucks. Safely accommodating these vehicles is certainly necessary; however, large corners also increase crossing distances for people walking and riding bikes, increasing exposure to traffic. Larger corners are also linked to faster turning speeds, which increase the potential for, and severity of, collisions between motorists and vulnerable road users.
